Looking back at network functions virtualization (NFV) services deployment in 2017, it appears that most attention was focused on the question of which company would be the first to introduce software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN or SDWAN) services based on bare metal appliances (black box).
This deployment methodology, of using black box devices, is in conjunction with the NFV software-hardware decoupling and allows for a more diverse software environment.
Since the beginning of 2018, we have seen significant interest in returning to and building the right foundation for broad and agile NFV services at the edge, using open universal customer premise equipment (uCPE) which allows for “mix and match” between different hardware architectures (Intel, Arm) and a variety of virtual network function (VNF) vendors.
The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 was an excellent opportunity for Telco Systems to demonstrate the capabilities for open uCPE running a broad selection of VNFs and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware.
Telco Systems’ new Arm-based solution has gained high traction and received enthusiastic feedback from service providers and other potential partners. The company, together with Arm and Telco Systems’ Arm ecosystem partners, held live demos presenting best-in-class uCPE solutions for secured cloud and internet-managed services on multiple hardware architecture from Arm and NXP Semiconductor, and white box from Lanner, CyberTan and Nexcom.
The demonstration included combined Intel-Arm deployment, supported and managed by single management and orchestration (MANO), providing more deployment choices and flexibility.
Among others, Telco Systems showcased, together with Marvell and NXP, the industry’s first Arm-based uCPE solution available on the market, including Marvell ARMADA 8040 system-on-chip (SoC) and NXP Semiconductors’ LS series solutions and a variety of Intel-based processors.
This new joint solution meets ongoing market requirement for additional high-performance options for telcos and managed service providers to select the appropriate hardware architecture for their specific operational and business requirements. It received a warm welcome, drawing much attention at the mobile show and gaining high traction with market leaders, service providers and technology companies.
With the our new uCPE solutions Telco Systems is well positioned to meet growing demand for such solutions.
