Telco Systems and Sun Microsystems Team for Carrier-grade Ethernet Solution

FOXBORO, MA, February 17, 2009 – Telco Systems today announced that they have successfully certified interoperability of Sun Microsystems' Netra(TM) carrier-grade rack server platforms with Telco Systems Carrier Ethernet/IP solutions. The combination of Sun's Netra servers and Telco Systems BiNOS-powered Carrier Ethernet switches offers service providers and Global Network Equipment Providers a comprehensive solution and highly reliable configuration for delivering high-bandwidth, mission-critical applications to their subscribers. The testing performed demonstrated interoperability for streaming video, remote client, large file transfers and server/switch redundancy applications.

"Sun continues to build a robust ecosystem of carrier grade partners to provide customers with maximum choice, " said Mark Butler, Netra product line director, Sun Microsystems. "Telco Systems' qualification of their Ethernet/IP Solutions on Sun's Netra servers gives customers a new option and helps simplify the task of deploying high-performance, highly reliable and available carrier grade solutions for an all IP-based network."

“As service providers look for new revenue-generating services such as storage networking, video surveillance, and IPTV, it is critical that the infrastructure is optimized to support these applications,” said Dave Lee, vice president of business development for Telco Systems in North America “Based on the results and performance of this testing, we are confident that the combination of Sun's Netra servers and Telco Systems Carrier Ethernet switch platforms can not only support these applications, but offer a highly resilient Carrier Ethernet alternatives to legacy networks.”

Throughput testing and interoperability between the Sun Netra(TM) T5220 and X4250 servers and Telco Systems’ BiNOS-powered switches included both ring and LAG protection scenarios to observe failover effects on applications running from server to server and server to Internet.

Sun's Netra family is the broadest carrier-grade server portfolio in the industry and also provides customers a choice of DC or AC power options and a variety of operating systems, including the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), Linux and Windows. The Netra X4250 server is a 2RU dual-socket server based on Intel Xeon quad-core processors. The Netra T5220 server is a 2RU single-socket server powered by the 64-thread UltraSPARC(R) T2 processor to optimize network throughput, density, and power consumption in a NEBS-Level 3 certified package. More information on Sun's Neta servers is available at: http://www.sun.com/netra.

Telco Systems Carrier Ethernet switches utilize the Company’s embedded BiNOS operating system to provide support for multiple transport domains for transparent deployment into existing networks, supports multi-layer OAM capabilities for managed and assured service delivery, and provides full service management for adaptation into service provider management models. These small form-factor energy efficient switches offer service providers a cost-effective solution for Carrier Ethernet deployments.
