Debunking the Myths: Why Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) Save Service Providers Money

Virtualization Myths, Debunked blog

Service providers, MSPs, and VARs are under pressure to deliver faster, more innovative services at lower costs, all while maintaining customer satisfaction.

Yet one persistent misconception keeps many organizations from modernizing: the belief that virtualization is more expensive than traditional hardware appliances.

In reality, virtual network functions (VNFs) and edge virtualization unlock significant cost savings, operational efficiencies, and long-term flexibility.

Let’s separate fact from fiction.

1. Shared Hardware = Lower CAPEX

In a hardware-centric world, every service requires its own box – router firewall, SD-WAN, security appliance, you name it. With virtualization, multiple services run on a single shared server.

  • Fewer boxes = lower hardware spend
  • Less rack space required
  • Lower energy consumption and cooling needs

This directly translates to reduced capital expenditure (CAPEX) without sacrificing service quality.

2. Scale without breaking the budget

In the appliance model, costs grow linearly. One service = one appliance. Two services = two appliances.

With VNFs, scaling is smarter:

  • Add a new service as software, not hardware
  • Two services running on the same server can reduce costs by up to 40% per service
  • Savings multiply as more VNFs are consolidated on shared hardware

This model makes growth predictable, efficient, and far less expensive.

3. Cut OPEX with Zero Truck Rolls

Operational expenditure (OPEX) is where virtualization shines. Every truck roll to install or update hardware costs an average of $750. Multiply that across dozens or hundreds of customer sites, and you’re burning through budgets.

With virtualization:

  • New services can be activated remotely
  • Updates are pushed instantly through a central orchestrator
  • Customers can self-install basic hardware, reducing downtime

Less time on the road, less manual intervention, and fewer support calls all add up to major OPEX savings.

4. Long-term Flexibility vs. Vendor Lock-In

Single-purpose appliances lock you into a specific vendor’s roadmap. Want to switch vendors, add new features, or try a new service? You’ll need new hardware and new costs.

Virtualization changes the game:

  • VNFs can run on vendor-neutral hardware
  • You control the stack, not your supplier
  • You gain flexibility to innovate and adapt without hardware swaps

Some vendors try to discourage this by pricing their VNFs the same as their appliance bundles; a clear tactic to maintain vendor lock-in. That’s your signal to look for more open, customer-friendly alternatives.

5. The Bigger Picture: Future-Proofing the Edge

While single-function appliances may look cheaper in the short term, they create long-term rigidity and costs. Virtualization, on the other hand, is built for future-proofing:

  • Software-defined services evolve with your business
  • New VNFs can be added without hardware refreshes
  • Your edge infrastructure adapts to market demands, not the other way around

Conclusion
The idea that virtualization is more expensive is a myth that belongs in the past. By embracing VNFs, service providers and channel partners gain:

  • Lower CAPEX through hardware consolidation
  • Lower OPEX through remote service management
  • Freedom from vendor lock-in
  • A scalable, future-proof edge strategy

In today’s market, where broadband is commoditized and customer expectations are higher than ever, virtualization isn’t just the cost-effective choice, it’s the competitive choice.
