BLOG ARTICLE Quantum-Safe Migration

Imagine finding out your identity was stolen. You have no control now. And the only thing standing between you and disaster was how long the thief decided to wait.

That’s harvest-now-decrypt-later. It isn’t a future risk. It’s active today, against the same VPNs, WAN links, and signed transactions your network carries this minute. Your encrypted traffic is being copied and stored right now. The target is long-life data: financial records, patient files, defense communications, IP. But long-life data gets no grace period. It’s already exposed retroactively, the moment it was encrypted.

Your data is already in someone else’s hands. The only question is when the lock stops holding – and whether you’ve replaced it first.

Here’s what usually stops organizations from acting: the assumption that fixing this means a painful, disruptive, multi-year project. It doesn’t have to. BATM’s approach is built to be simple, running quietly alongside the network you already operate – no rebuild, no downtime, no reason to keep putting this off.

The Deadline You're Picturing Already Passed

It’s tempting to treat 2027 as the moment the clock starts. It isn’t. NIST finalized its PQC standards (FIPS 203, 204, 205) in August 2024 – that’s when the technical bar moved. Regulatory deadlines just tighten from there, phased from 2025 through 2033. Banks, hospitals, telecom operators, and government agencies are still budgeting as if the clock hasn’t started at all.

Meanwhile, the data itself is still on the hook. Patient records need 50+ years of confidentiality. Financial records, 7 to 30. Defense data, indefinitely. Nearly all of it runs on RSA and ECC – algorithms a working quantum computer will eventually break. The adversary doesn’t need that computer today. They just need it before your data stops mattering, and every quarter without a migration adds more exposure and less runway to close the gap.

AI Didn't Just Speed Up the Threat , It Widened It

AI is reshaping the attack surface quantum will eventually exploit. Automated tools now scan, fingerprint, and harvest vulnerable traffic at machine speed, across far more of the network than any human red team could cover. Harvest-now-decrypt-later used to take patience. Now it’s continuous.

Firewalls and VPNs stop attacks that look familiar. AI-driven reconnaissance doesn’t have to. That’s why quantum-safe migration is also the moment to move protection into hardware – a root of trust no compromised software layer above it can weaken.

BATM embeds quantum-safe encryption at the hardware level, underneath the software stack an AI-driven attacker would target. Protection that holds no matter what happens above it.

Migration Doesn't Mean Rebuilding the Network

Most organizations stall on one assumption: that quantum-readiness means ripping out core infrastructure. It doesn’t. Of the five architectural paths to PQC, the Layer-2 encrypted overlay wins on disruption, speed, and crypto-agility – it sits below routing, invisible to MPLS, BGP, and SD-WAN policy, with carrier-grade uptime by design.

Discovery and prioritization are usually where migrations bog down. BATM makes that part easy – no disruption to live traffic, no internal audit to staff, no months mapping your own network before protection can start.

What Good Organizations Get Wrong

  • Underestimating the timeline – Your network needs to be quantum-safe within three years, not when a deadline arrives. Start now, not after.
  • Assuming quantum-safe means replacing the network – It doesn’t. Overlays run on the MPLS, SD-WAN, and VPN infrastructure you already have. Nothing gets torn out.
  • Trying to own the migration internally – You don’t have to. BATM runs discovery, prioritization, and phased rollout for you, so your team isn’t staffing a multi-year cryptography project on top of its day job.

The Networks That Survive This Are the Ones Already Moving

The networks that come through the quantum transition intact won’t be the ones that waited for a deadline. They’ll be the ones modernized quietly, in phases, without disrupting the business they carry – PQC running underneath the same topology they already have.

You don’t have to run this migration alone. BATM takes ownership end to end – from cryptographic discovery through phased overlay deployment – so your team gets a protected network without building or staffing the project yourselves.

Talk to us about what that looks like for your infrastructure.
